St Leonard’s Catholic School is a highly successful and oversubscribed secondary school with sixth form located in the historic cathedral city of Durham. Our school aims to provide a stimulating and encouraging environment within which pupils can attain the highest standards of which they are capable, and to assist them in taking their place in the world outside school in a useful and fulfilling career, with a firm sense of Catholic commitment.
St Leonard’s was named as part of the national School’s Re-Building Programme and with plans in the advanced stages, work started in autumn 2024. At present the school is split across two sites in close proximity to one another. Our new school building will open in Spring 2026 and this is an exciting time to join our school.
St Leonard’s is one of the highest achieving schools in the North-East, with almost 50% of all grades awarded 9-7. Our students also achieve equally impressive results at A Level (Overall Grade B) and we are amongst the most successful schools in the region for applications to Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities.
We are proud to be part of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, a family of secondary, middle, primary and first schools in Durham, Gateshead, Northumberland and Sunderland. Bishop Wilkinson is the largest catholic education trust in the North East of England with a total of 48 schools.
