Monkseaton High School
Monkseaton High School is a 14-19 mixed secondary school with a genuinely inclusive ethos. We are proud to be part of the North Tyneside Learning Trust and have embraced the many opportunities this has afforded our students. We are a smaller than average high school with a 6th Form; this has been compounded recently by a fall in demographics locally, however, numbers are increasing.
Typically, we have a lower academic profile on entry than most schools and a higher level of disadvantage than most schools nationally. However, this has does not mean that any student is held back or disadvantaged, as is demonstrated in outcomes and progress made by all students. The strong leadership, dedicated staffing body and the relentless drive for improvement across all measures, has resulted in a sustained upward trend of achievement consistently in line with or above national. Significantly so in the majority of threshold areas, especially when comparing to similar school contexts. Ultimately ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive and achieve in our school.
Key to the rise in standards and outcomes has been the constant and unrelenting drive to ensure excellent standards of teaching, learning and engagement. Our CPD programme has been instrumental in providing staff the opportunity and time to engage in their own professional development and develop their practice. Every member of teaching staff is allocated one period per fortnight (we teach a 2 week timetable) to participate in a teaching and learning group and every Tuesday period 5 is dedicated to one hour training. We believe in developing our staff, for instance we have worked with Newcastle University and delivering the NPQML programme in house as part of our CPD programme for our middle leaders in 2017. As a school, we work in partnership with local Teaching Schools and host ITT students.
Changes to leadership and staffing transformed the school’s capacity to improve as evidenced in rising outcomes over the past six years, including 2017 results. We were inspected in February 2016 and were judged Outstanding. We are one of the few schools to have achieved this from a previous inspection judgment of Requires Improvement. The report is included within the information pack.
The current Headteacher and the leadership team are well qualified; Tracy Crowder is a National Leader of Education and holds NPQH & MEd, two members of the Leadership team are Specialist Leaders in Education (SLEs) with a number of middle leaders also holding this accreditation. The school is a National Support School and is brokered to provide support locally. The Headteacher and senior staff lead and deliver training at regional events and training programmes across the region. We are often asked to support other schools, as much of what we now do is seen as outstanding practice. Our school is outward facing and works collaboratively within the Local Authority and other North Tyneside Learning Trust schools.
An experienced Governing Body provides outstanding support and challenge to the HT, SLT and the school. The chair of Governors is highly regarded and was a serving Headteacher in the North East for many Years.
We are one of two high schools in the Local Authority working within a three-tier system (with four feeder middle schools). Students enter the school in Year 9 and the two high schools and middle schools work collaboratively to bridge and dovetail our KS3 curriculums. Collaborative meetings are held frequently, as are reciprocated visits within the pyramid. Effective transition is key to our success to ensure consistency and smooth movement from middle to high school.
We host a very successful Post 16 Football Academy that draws in students from other schools in the area and beyond. Further information about the school is included within the application pack; however, please do visit our website for more information.Visit School Website
