Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust is seeking to appoint an exceptional education professional as Primary School Improvement Lead, to bring enthusiasm, expertise and ambition to help to lead school improvement during the next stage of our exciting development as a Trust.
Based at our HQ in Washington, the successful candidate will work as part of an exceptional education team to take a lead on school improvement across our primary schools. This will include ensuring standards are high in our schools and supporting school leaders to continually improve our educational offer. The postholder will work closely with the Senior Director of Performance and Standards and the wider education team. The successful candidate will have experience of school improvement across several schools.
Job Purpose
- To take a leading role in school improvement in the Trust’s primary schools.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with key members of the education team to continue to develop and implement the Trust’s school improvement strategy.
- Support the Senior Director for Performance and Standards with the monitoring, evaluation and review of standards and provision across the Trust’s primary schools in order to set incisive priorities for improvement.
- Work with the Senior Director of Performance and Standards to oversee and ensure the work of the primary education team and school improvement partners.
- Keep abreast of educational developments, including evidence-led best practice nationally, to ensure the Trust is at the forefront of curriculum design and delivery.
- Work directly with headteachers, senior and middle leaders and local governing committees to secure and maintain educational excellence across the Trust’s primary schools.
- Foster and facilitate collaboration to ensure that the best practice is shared across Trust schools.
- Work with the Trust’s Centre for Teaching to develop, deliver and broker professional development for leaders and staff across the Trust, including assuring the quality of school-to-school support.
- Coach and support leaders across the Trust to develop an expert workforce.
- Support senior and subject leaders with the design of curriculum across the primary age range.
- Support headteachers and senior leaders to ensure accurate and incisive self-evaluation and improvement planning.
- Support schools to nurture potential among staff to grow capacity in advance of need, developing a future supply of subject and senior leaders for Trust schools.
- Engage in promoting the Trust’s values and acting as a role model for the Trust.

The successful candidate will have:
- Demonstrable experience of successfully leading major change to achieve school improvement.
- Demonstrable experience of highly effective teaching and senior leadership.
- Experience of coaching, mentoring, and challenging senior members of staff to secure improvement.
- Highly effective interpersonal skills to build productive relationships with all stakeholders.
- The ability to champion strategic priorities and deliver change through strategic planning.
- Exceptional skills to evaluate a school and understand what is required to generate improvement, with a proven aptitude for coaching and supporting leaders.
- Effective collaboration skills, with the ability to build and draw on the strengths of others to generate outstanding results.
- Regard for the Catholic character of the Trust.
- A high degree of emotional intelligence and a positive and professional demeanour.
- Experience of working as an Ofsted inspector and/or supporting schools during inspection.

Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, formerly The Trinity Catholic Multi Academy Trust was set up on 1 February 2012. Cardinal Hume Catholic School, Gateshead was the first school in the trust.
Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, is currently a family of 5 secondary schools and 21 primary schools from across Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and Northumberland, in the west of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. The Trust is expanding rapidly and will reach a total of 48 schools by Summer 2022.
