Visiting Flute Teacher 

Part-time, permanent, term time only (self-employed role).  

We are looking to appoint an experienced and highly skilled flute teacher to work across two sites (Chorister School and Durham School) at Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation, to start at the beginning of the Easter term, January 2027. DCSF occupies two historical sites ten minutes walking distance apart in central Durham. The number of teaching hours can vary, but candidates need to be able to offer at least nine hours per week, either all on one day or split between days as preferred. This role would suit a candidate who has the ability and experience to teach all ages from beginner to advanced (grade 8 +). DCSF educates the Durham Cathedral Choristers and musical expectations and outcomes are high. For the right candidate there will also be the opportunity to be involved in ensemble coaching – at present there is a flute choir that meets on Thursdays.

At Chorister School, currently 88% of junior school pupils take at least one weekly music lesson, and in Durham School around 200 music lessons are taught each week. We have a flourishing musical environment, and across both sites we have 25 visiting music teachers. The Chorister School music department’s motto is ‘Inclusion and Excellence’, and we work hard to support pupils with well-attended, motivating and supportive practice sessions scheduled between 3-5 times per day.  Students moving on to Durham School from Year 7 continue to receive instrumental lessons on a large range of instruments and have access to well-resourced music department facilities. In addition to our large orchestra and chapel choir, numerous smaller instrumental ensembles also meet each week to rehearse.  ABRSM examination sessions are busy every term and results are high, with many students achieving distinction. Theory clubs take place weekly and support music students through grade 5 theory and beyond. The departmental staff, VMTs, parents and wider school community work closely to support the pupils and there are a huge range of performance opportunities throughout the year.

Interested candidates should complete a DCSF application form. 

Shortlisted candidates will be required to teach two 20 min lessons: to a beginner and an intermediate/advanced student and will also be required to perform a piece of their choice. Interviews will be with the Directors of Music of Chorister School and Durham School.
